What was once a thriving mill, employing 300 workers, is now unoccupied and in a state of disrepair. The local council is very keen to restore the mill to its former glory as part of its regeneration programme. It has secured European funding to convert the building into a small shopping centre. The centre will provide space for 20 shops and two restaurants and will retain most of the Mill s original features. Sam McGuigan is a reputable chef having worked in many top restaurants and hotels throughout Europe. He has recently returned to Ballymure and is keen to open up his own restaurant. Sam is excited about the plans for the Mill. Although Sam has a good reputation as a chef, he does not have enough capital to fully equip one of the new restaurant units. Sam has approached Bill Gormley, a local entrepreneur, about his idea to open a restaurant and has asked him if he would like to invest in the project. Bill is keen on the idea but has advised Sam that it might be beneficial to draw up a business plan. Sam has never heard of a business plan and feels that it will be a waste of time drawing one up as he has already verbally described his idea to Bill. (a) Explain briefly the areas that Sam might be expected to include in his business plan. [10] (b) Discuss whether Sam should draw up a business plan for the proposed restaurant. The company was formed in 1949 and has earned a good reputation for its products right across the United Kingdom. The company s initial success was a result of many factors, including its commitment to manufacture high quality products at affordable prices and the increase in demand for prams that resulted from the 1945 1965 baby boom . The increase in population meant that demand for the company s products remained high for more than thirty years. However, during the 1980s, management noticed a decline in this demand. They decided to investigate the reasons for this downturn and concluded that it was due to a change in demographic trends. Recently Babigo Ltd has encountered difficult trading conditions and has diversified into new markets, including children s toys. This strategy has kept the company profitable, but the earlier achievements have not been repeated and the managing director, Sally Brown, has now decided to retire and sell the company. Her senior management team have been very loyal and have worked hard to keep the company profitable during the difficult times. Sally has decided to approach the senior management team to see if they would be interested in a management buyout. (a) Explain the importance of demographic trends to a company such as Babigo Ltd. [10] (b) Discuss whether the senior management team of Babigo Ltd should proceed with the buyout. [15] THIS IS THE END OF THE QUESTION PAPER AST1S6 2266 3 SP (NF) T21597/1
