It manufactures a range of consumer electrical products, mainly for the UK market. As part of its expansion strategy, Technico plc intends to significantly extend its product range over the next two years. However, to do so, it will need to recruit ten scientists to work in its research and development department. Robert Shaw, the Human Resources Manager, has already taken the decision to recruit these workers externally. He reasoned that any internal training process would take too long. External recruitment would be quicker because less training would be needed and it would bring fresh ideas into the business. Technico plc is prepared to offer suitable applicants a highly competitive salary combined with excellent conditions of service. Robert now needs to choose appropriate methods of external recruitment and selection. Although it would be possible to fill the vacancies using only graduates from local universities, Robert realises that Technico plc needs to achieve a good balance of applicants. He wants to ensure that Technico plc employs scientists with appropriate industrial experience as well as relevant academic qualifications. Such a combination will contribute towards giving Technico plc a competitive advantage over its rivals. (a) Explain three methods of external recruitment that Technico plc could use in this situation. [10] (b) Discuss the selection methods that Technico plc might use to ensure that suitable workers are recruited. [15] AST2S7 2801 2 2 Study the information below and answer the questions that follow. Variance Analysis Botlit Ltd is a family owned company which manufactures plastic bottles for soft drinks producers. In recent years the business has lost sales to foreign competitors who have been quicker to adopt modern production techniques. Eric Lobbet, the founder and Managing Director of Botlit Ltd, realised that the situation had to be addressed. He asked the Financial Manager to devise a strategy to reduce the costs of the company. The first stage in this strategy has just been completed. This involved the introduction of a computerised information network. It enabled managers at all levels within the firm to access up-to-date, accurate data relating to production and sales. Eric sees this as essential for the second stage of the strategy, the introduction of a variance analysis system. Unfortunately, there is a good deal of opposition to this plan. Managers have had to implement many changes over the last two years and the introduction of variance analysis is viewed with deep suspicion amongst the workforce. The Financial Manager decides to demonstrate to other managers how this system might help Botlit Ltd and produces actual and budgeted figures for the last month. These are shown in Table 1 below. Some of the figures are missing. Table 1 Budgeted and Actual performance of Botlit Ltd: May 2007 Budgeted Actual Variance Adverse/Favourable Sales revenue 900,000 800,000 ? ? Electricity costs 16,000 16,500 ? ? Cost of raw materials 750,000 730,000 20,000 Favourable (a) (i) Calculate the following variances and state whether each is adverse or favourable; The sales revenue variance The electricity costs variance [4] Candidates are not required to copy out Table 1. (ii) Explain three factors that might have caused the sales revenue variance shown in Table 1. [6] (b) Discuss the impact on Botlit Ltd of introducing a system of variance analysis.
