They traded under the name Rain X , manufacturing high quality waterproof clothing for a variety of sports and outdoor activities. For ten years they made satisfactory profits, operating from the same premises and serving mainly Northern Ireland customers. They resisted opportunities to expand the business. In 2003, Patrick completed a part-time degree in marketing. Following this, he and Susan took the decision to expand Rain X by increasing sales in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. This strategy was very successful and profits increased substantially. In 2005, the business became a private limited company and changed its name to Elementz Ltd . Family and friends bought shares in the new company. Recent market research has indicated that potential market opportunities exist in Eastern Europe. However, Elementz Ltd would need to build expensive new production facilities which it currently cannot afford. Patrick is keen for the firm to become a public limited company in order to exploit these new markets. Susan is more cautious and would like Elementz Ltd to remain a private limited company. (a) Explain why businesses sometimes choose to remain small. [10] (b) Discuss whether Elementz Ltd should become a public limited company. [15] AST1S7 2891 2 2 Study the information below and answer the questions that follow. Business Objectives Four years ago Vincent Lear planned to set up a business building garden furniture. In order to raise more capital he went to see his bank manager to discuss a loan. She was impressed by the detail of market research and financial preparation that Vincent had undertaken. The quality of his presentation and his clear outline of business objectives meant that she had no hesitation offering him the loan. Vincent concentrated on ensuring the survival of the business during the first year of trading. Over the next two years his business Garfurn , became very profitable. It now employs twenty workers, with fifteen being directly involved in the manufacturing process. However, Vincent has become increasingly concerned about productivity levels and products returned due to unsatisfactory quality. Frustrated by this downturn in performance and profits, Vincent confronted his production supervisor, Brian Hamlet. Vincent complained that workers were not motivated enough and did not share his business objectives. Brian responded angrily, That s a ridiculous suggestion. We re all in this business together . (a) Explain why it is important for businesses such as Garfurn to have clear objectives. [10] (b) Discuss whether workers objectives are likely to be different from Vincent s objectives.
