The company imports printing paper in bulk from South America and cuts it into different sizes. It is then branded and sold to a range of industrial and educational organisations located throughout Northern Ireland. The Board of Directors has set Halina the target of maintaining company profits in an increasingly competitive market. At her first meeting with the Production Manager, Halina discovered that much of the company paper supply came from forests which were not properly managed in order to encourage sustainable production. An internet search further revealed that there was growing public awareness over low wage levels amongst forestry workers in South America. Halina was concerned about these issues but the Production Manager did not share her unease. He stated that his aim was simply to meet customer requirements by keeping costs and prices as low as possible. Halina decided that Printum Ltd needed to take more consideration of all the ethical issues surrounding its business. At a senior management meeting she suggested that company profits might even be increased if Printum Ltd became more socially responsible. Her suggestion was strongly opposed by the Production Manager. (a) Explain three requirements, apart from a low price, that customers of Printum Ltd might have when buying from the company. [10] (b) Discuss Halina s suggestion that acting in a socially responsible manner might increase the profits of Printum Ltd.
