To help it achieve this the company s main focus is to manufacture the highest quality, most comfortable and aesthetically pleasing cabin environments so that airlines, aircraft operators and airframe manufacturers identify B/E Aerospace with their cabin interior needs . Business Activities Its business is clearly split between two different segments; the Commercial Aircraft Segment and the Business Jet Segment. The commercial aircraft segment is involved in the following activities: Commercial aircraft seating Food and beverage preparation and storage equipment Passenger and Crew oxygen delivery systems Closets, class dividers, crew rest compartments and galley structures Interior design and passenger/freighter conversion Engineering services The Business Jet Segment is involved in the following activities: Business jet seating Direct and indirect lighting Oxygen and fresh air delivery systems and protective breathing equipment Commercial aircraft Super First Class Suites. B/E Aerospace is committed to excellence in product innovation, quality, value and service. It also prides itself on the ability to provide a unique, single-source, solution for the aerospace industry. The Northern Ireland Connection One of B/E Aerospace s production plants is based in Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, and it employs approximately 600 people. The Kilkeel plant was set up in the 1960s trading under the name Aircraft Furnishings. During the 1990s the plant experienced a period of rapid growth from a turnover of under 10 million in 1996 to more than 84 million in 1999. Part of this growth was achieved through the takeover of other companies, including two fellow subsidiaries. However, business slumped following the attacks on America on September 11th 2001 when aircraft were hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. A3B3S7 2862.02 CSI 3 [Turn over Performance In 2005 the Kilkeel plant had an annual turnover of 97.9 million. Despite this, their pre tax losses stood at 14 million the largest loss for a Northern Ireland based company for that year. However, these figures were an improvement on the previous year when turnover was 77.1 million and pre tax losses were 19.6 million. In November 2005 the firm won an 87 million contract to supply business class seating to all of British Airways long haul aircraft. This contract reinforced the Kilkeel plant s position as the world s leading supplier of luxury business and economy class aircraft seating. The Expansion On the 15th March 2006 it was announced that a new expanded facility was to open. This expansion would allow the organisation to double its current level of output and strengthen its export capabilities. The overall cost of the expansion was helped by 3 million of government assistance provided by Invest NI. The chief executive of Invest NI said that the expansion would help to safeguard the plant s future and help it to compete at a global level. Clifford McSpadden, the vice President and Managing Director of the Kilkeel operation agreed with this analysis stating that the expansion would mean that the plant would become the biggest aircraft production facility in the aircraft industry allowing it to satisfy the long term needs of its customer base. It would also mean that an additional 200 people would be employed by the company and research and development work could continue with Northern Ireland s two universities. He further outlined the potential supply chain opportunities that would arise in Northern Ireland as a result of the expansion.
