[1) ncsE Marking Scheme 2016) 11 Examiner's Comments (a) Candidates collllUitted errors in the 3rd and 6tl1 digit of the grid reference (b) ln most answers the direction was incorrect and for the evidence, generalized answer were written. (c) Most candidates outitted the word "relative' 'and only wrote height. (d) Errors were committed as candidates did not appear to w1derstand the question, nor were able to calculate the area. Many candidates failed to write the urlit. (e) Candidates forgot to write the unit. (f) Instead of perem1ial water channel in a dry bed many just wrote perennial river that changed the meaning of the answer completely. (g) (ii) Most candidates wrote incorrect answers. The disappearing drainage pattern was identified as Trellis or Rectangular. (h) Most candidates did not understand the scope of tl1e question. Instead of climate they wTote about rainfall condition only. (i) Some candidates were confused on what are natural or man made features. Some were unable to specify the features (j) (i) Instead of longitude, some candidates wrote latitude. (ii) Most candidates were unaware of the correct answer. Answering tips Extensive practice of six figure grid reference must be conducted. Compass direction should be learnt rigorously. Clear difference between spot height, relative height, contour height should be learnt. Students should learn that all numbers with 'r' are relative height (i.e. in relation to the adjacent area.) Insist that utlit is compulsory for all questions where calculation of any type is done. Understand when to state the pattern as dendritic and disappearing. A list of natural and man-made features given in 45D/7 and 45D/10 can be provided by the teachers to make it easier. Students must be encouraged to study from the text book. Q.6. Study the extract of the Survey of India Map Sheet No. 45 0/10 [Refe.r toposheet on page 195) and answer the following questions : ncsE, 2015] (a) Give the four figure grid reference for a figure similar to the one given below. (1] (f) (i) Causeway- A raised road over a small stream but not a bridge/ A raised metalled road over a non-perennial stream or marshy area or which serves as a temporary bridge. [1] (ii) Falls 25m- It indicates a waterfall which is falling from a height of 25 metres. [1] (g) (i) 1 Hour. (1] (ii) 15 sq. kms. (1] (h) (i) 1610- Seasonal stream, broken ground, dry stream. [1] (ii) 1903- Permanentsettlement, embankment. [1] (i) Presence of broken ground, causeways, cart track motorable in dry season. (2] (j) Highest point is 1409 m and contour height is 2402 is 280 m. Difference is 1409-280= 1129 metres. [ICSE Marking Scheme 2015) Examiner's Comments: (a) The first part of the question was answered correctly. In most cases i.e. 4 figure number, Candidates could not identify the conventional symbol correctly. In most cases the second part of the answer was answered incorrectly or answered partly correct i.e. instead of writing seasonal tank with embankment candidates wrote either just "dry tank" or "tank" and in most cases "embankment" was missing. (b) Most candidates were able to identify the drainage patterns, although, they misspelt the terms in many cases. In some cases a little conh1sion between "Trellis" and "dendritic" pattern was observed. (c) The Six figure grid reference was identified and answered correctly in most cases. (d) A few candidates got coufused and named Hetamji and Mohanpura instead of Vajna. In most cases candidates wrote the correct answer. (e) (i) Most candidates could not understand the general slope and answered it as steep/ gentle/convex, etc. The direction of the slope of the land was answered incorrectly in most cases. (ii) The compass direction was correctly answered in most cases. (f) (i) The causeway was not defined correctly by candidates in most cases. (ii) Candidates just repeated the term "falls" as given in the question or wrote stream is falling. Only a few wrote the correct term "waterfall" of 25m. Generally the definitions of botl1 the terms were not written appropriately. (g) Except in a few cases where the area was not calculated of the enclosed region, most candidates answered correctly. A few candidates lost marks as they did not write the unit. (h) Answered correctly by most candidates. However some mentioned "tries" as a natural feature which was incorrect and a few wrote "broken land" instead of the correct term "broken grow1.d". INTERPRETATION OF TOPOGRAPHICAL MAPS (i) Most candidates were tmable to comprehend "other than dry water feature" and hence answered 'dry stream or dry tank'. Some incorrectly wrote open scrub. (j) Most candidates incorrectly answered as they could not identify the highest point. In some cases the unit was not mentioned although the calculations were correct. No marks were awarded if the unit was missing. Answering tips: Conventional symbols should be revised and their meaning explained clearly to students. Definition of terms used on the toposheet should be revised regularly. Emphasis should be laid on writing correct spelling of terms. The concept of the nature of slope and general slope of the land should be made clear. Nature of slope relates of gentle/steep/convex etc. While general slope relates to the slope on map area i.e. which side is higher and which side is lower students should learn contour heights and spot heights to answer about the general slope of the land and for nature of slope. Additional practice on applied questions on distance calculation should be taken up to build up the concept of scale and ground relation. Emphasis should be laid on writing the unit while writing the answer on distance or area calculation. Drainage patterns must be revised regularly. A clear difference between dendritic and 'frellis pattern should be taught. Students should learn about the evidence of seasonal rainfall and scanty rainfall separately. 6-figure grid reference must be practised regularly. Regular practice of 46D/7 and 45D/10 toposheets at least once a week will help in clearing doubts. Students must learn to look for the highest and lowest points on the map extract. Q.7. Study the extract of the Survey of India Map Sheet No. 45 D/10 (Refer toposheet on page 196) and answer the following questions: (ICSE, 2014) (a) (i) Give the four figure grid reference of the settlement of Hamirpura. (ii) Motorable in the dry season was written instead of mentioning cart tract motorable in dry season. (g) (i) Candidates had difficulty in identifying the features on the map. (ii) Candidates were w1able to differentiate between man made and natural features. (i) Very few candidates made accurate calcuIa tions, however a few forgot to mention the utut. (j) (i) Some candidates wrote latitude instead of longitude. (ii) Altitude of 302m was written instead of the sport height in some cases. Answering tips: Adequate revision of conventional symbols should be undertaken. Insist that only 8 cardinal points need to be mentioned. Patterns of settlement should be revised by drawing symbols on the black board. Regular practice by showing the diagrams of drainage patterns should be done. Understand the evidence fow1d for seasonal rainfall and formation of broken ground. Differences should be made clear between tl1e man made and natural features (especially in case of tanks.) Students should learn the difference between man made and natural features on the map. Revise the meat1ing of various conventional symbols. The correct method of calculating area accurately and mention the unit (km2) must be revised in class. Q.8.
