I liked the white tent roof effect it looked very striking against the hills behind it. You need at least 90 minutes to do this one justice! It is an interactive exhibition with sound effects, temperature changes and surround sound to go along with the video/film. Our first stop was one of the eleven scenes they call earthscapes . It was supposed to be an environmental monitoring station. Anyway, this is where you get into the Time Machine. It s a sort of souped-up lift that takes you back 15,000 million years. They had rigged it so it seemed like you were moving through starfields. The lift doors opened and we staggered out into the darkness; well, there was a neon light in the far corner but it was very dark and there was a lot of bumping and Sorry, was that your toe? This was the deck of a spaceship. Through viewing windows we witnessed the awesome Big Bang, which started it all off the birth of the Solar System. Did I mention the whole thing moved? We flew forward in time, which was fine until we came to an earthquake. Rather good but I nearly lost my balance and the man beside me lost his wife who kind of slid gently away to bounce off the far wall. Of course this earthquake threw up mountains and lava spewing volcanos, complete with blasts of air hotter than a furnace, to be dodged by our spaceship. They did it really well because when we came to the glaciers you got another blast, this time freezing cold. Some people in my group looked quite queasy as we left the spaceship and walked across a nasty-looking mixture with the first life forms crawling out of it ... they were almost the same shade as the heaving sludge! I d hate to have fallen into those gooey, greenish bubbles! From here we followed a timeline through the age of dinosaurs to the appearance of Early Man before climbing into a yellow submarine and exploring the ocean. There were loads of other areas, in fact it was a lot to take in. But we all loved the tropical rain forest, which was full of animated animals and snakes. One big snake appeared suddenly and threateningly from the undergrowth. They even laid on a thunderstorm and real rain! No, you don t get wet but it s very convincing. It s all terribly exciting but noisy from start to finish so you might end up with a headache. At least you get a sit down for the final bit, a film about how we are destroying the Earth, of course. Having watched this film about logging and pollution you leave, by way of a gift shop so, as you plan how to save the planet, you can buy a pencil or a mug at the same time! S 5/06 7-087-2 [Turn over Our brand new audio guides are just fantastic! It s just like having your very own personal explorer to accompany you on your journey through time and across the planet. They help you discover the hidden gems of our dynamic earth, highlight interesting facts and explain key areas in even more detail. Audio guides are available in English, French, German, Spanish & Italian. There s even a specially tailored children s guide featuring Vasco the explorer.
