I read somewhere that each year, some 200,000 people take time out to go travelling and not all of them are school leavers like me! I decided to go to India and to do something worthwhile . . . in some way. But if I m being honest my motives for volunteering were far from pure. At the start, I just had this idea that I wanted to get as far away from home as I could and live somewhere exotic, preferably with great weather and a full social life. I didn t want to lounge around the pool on a sunbed all the time: I wanted to get the REAL experience of living with the locals. So, I found one of these new volunteering companies online and signed up! It cost me a hefty 2,000. For that, I got two weeks travelling round, seeing all the sights like the Taj Mahal and then I got to do something worthwhile, teaching two weeks in an orphanage. I had chosen the project because I wanted to work with children. Honestly, I hadn t realised just how challenging it was actually going to be. At home, I d taken for granted things like carpet and chocolate and cups of tea. In my hotel , the beds were really grotty, the loos were disgusting and this truly vile smell seemed to be everywhere. Do you know, there were even biscuits with cockroach bites taken out of them. Yuck! From the moment I arrived at the orphanage, I was expected to know what to do. I was expected to get up at 5.30 am, look after and entertain 40 screaming kids. I was expected to know how to cope with kids who did not speak English. It was a waking nightmare! And as for teaching . . . I didn t know where to start! When I asked I got told, Just play games with them! Did I do any research before I went? Of course I did! I read as much as I could find on where I was going. I thought (foolishly) that I d get SOME sort of support! Did I? Not a bit and, believe me, a raw volunteer was the last thing those kids needed. Was it a waste of time and money? Well, I don t believe I did any good at all! Frankly, I get really angry when I think about how that company simply dumped me and presumed I d cope. However, it did make me realise how lucky I am: being at home again is like living in a 5 star hotel by comparison! So, don t believe all that stuff about getting a warm fuzzy feeling from having done something worthwhile . It certainly wasn t true in my experience! My advice? Give your money to a charity and just go on holiday instead!
