My little girl doesn t eat! Well, that s not quite true Holly eats but not the foods that everyone knows are good for children . . . like fruit. What am I going to do? It s all very well saying that I should get the children involved in cooking. I DO! We have great fun making crispy buns and redecorating the kitchen at the same time! The last time we baked I did everything right. I even bought a juicer so we could whiz up some smoothies with strawberries and milk. When Rob, my husband, arrived home, the walls and cupboards looked like Barbie had brought in a make-over team. Even the cat was covered in pink froth he was not amused. The cat, I mean! Rob just fell about laughing. Of course HE did not have to clean it all up. But he did take Holly off to hose her down. Now here s the odd thing. She did not eat even one, single, small piece of strawberry! So, what DOES she eat? She has always been a fussy eater, really. When we used to go to restaurants, there would be other children sitting, eating smaller versions of the meals their parents were having. Holly just sat there refusing to feed herself or be fed. Usually she ended up throwing spoonfuls at the other junior diners! I always carried some emergency food with me. The odd chocolate mousse or mini Mars bar would appear and there would be silence for a while. But the way the other parents looked at us! It was as if we were handing our child rat poison. We stopped going out to restaurants. Once I had to sit and listen to this know-it-all mother telling me how I should be feeding my little angel. It was on a school outing and I had just gone along because they needed some parents to help out. Trust me to get stuck with one of those Perfect Mummy types no one else would sit beside her, I suppose. It did not take her long to get started, Of course, children who are hungry will eat whatever you give them, believe me. I trained Emma to eat raw carrot when she got in after playgroup none of those crisps or biscuits for us, oh no! On and on she went about how to train your child. Fussy eaters will not just grow out of bad eating habits, you know. If you let them skip meals and eat what they like, well, they will think that junk food is the only food, won t they? Just to annoy her, I ate my emergency Mars bar! You should have seen her face. Still, I am no nearer getting Holly to eat her five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. I have tried all the tricks smothering everything with ketchup, adding food colourings to make the meal exciting as well as letting her choose her own fruit and other healthy snacks when we go shopping. Nothing works. Holly is only happy with toast and beans or chicken nuggets and chips . . . I give up pass me a king size Mars bar!
