I hate the stuff, never more than on a bus when somebody sits behind you chewing noisily all through your journey. The sound of someone chewing gum incessantly, like some mindless cow chewing the cud, is enough to drive anyone insane! This chewing of gum is one thing, but not disposing of it properly is another. It costs 3p a stick to buy, but 10p to prise it off the pavement. Dropping used gum irresponsibly is an unpleasant nuisance, an eyesore for the public and a major headache for those who have to clean it up. It s about time we tackled the blight of gum on our streets. Chewing gum is a growing menace in the UK that is costing taxpayers millions each year to clean up. We need to think before we spit! Currently, the clean-up bill for local authorities across the UK is as high as 150m a year. Belfast Council spends 60,000 a year on gum removal, but could spend ten times that and not crack the problem. At any given time, on Belfast s main shopping street, Royal Avenue, there are more than 300,000 pieces of discarded chewing gum. It s a disgrace! It looks like our streets have some nasty disease. Squads of cleaners are out working seven days a week. They start at the top of Royal Avenue, work down one side of the street and back up the other side that takes anywhere between four to eight weeks! By the time they ve finished, they have to start all over again! There are 28 million gum chewers in the UK, spending over 240m on 935 million packets a year. With rocketing sales, we must look at new ways of tackling the problem on our streets before it spirals out of control. The gum manufacturers led by chewing gum giant Wrigley should take more responsibility for cleaning up their product. Surprise, surprise they are sticking to their position. Wrigley, which produces 90% of the UK s gum, blames gum litter on the irresponsible behaviour of a minority of chewers, who they believe need to be educated to dispose of their litter properly. As for helping pay for what the councils say is a massive cost the gum giant is keeping its hands in its pockets and its mouth closed. One way to solve the problem is for gum manufacturers to make more environmentally-friendly, biodegradable gum. Wrigley maintains it has invested around 5 million into researching biodegradable gum options, claiming no success to date. Now that is hard to swallow! Research by a US university has shown that environmentally-friendly gum is a definite possibility. Enough excuses Wrigley, give us some promises that stick! Yours, A. Citizen 891-005-2 [Turn over
