INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your Centre Number and Candidate Number on the Answer Booklet provided. Answer all four questions. Spend one hour on Section A and one hour on Section B. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES The total mark for this paper is 60. Figures in brackets printed down the right-hand side of pages indicate the marks awarded to each question or part question. This paper is accompanied by a newspaper article and Text A for use with questions 2, 3 and 4. 4643 Section A This section tests writing skills: to inform, explain and describe. Write in a way that suits this type of task. The answer should be developed fully. You will be expected to write at least two sides. Leave enough time to re-read your work so that you can make any changes you feel are necessary. ______________________________________________________________________________ 1 Your school/college is burying a box as a time capsule* for future students to find. The box will contain three objects selected to represent life in 2009. You have been asked to select the three objects and write a letter to be included. The examiner wants you to write the letter to future students which you would include in the time capsule. Your letter should: briefly describe the three objects and then explain why you chose them inform your readers about the part these objects play in life in 2009. Begin your letter: To the individual or individuals who open this time capsule greetings from 2009. My task, in this letter, is . . . [30] * Time capsule: a box that contains items from our time that would give people in the future (100 200 years from now) an insight into our lives. 4643 2 [Turn over Section B This section tests reading skills: media and non- ction. Spend about 15 minutes reading the material enclosed: a newspaper article and Text A a teenager s blog. Answer all three questions. ______________________________________________________________________________ 2 Answer using the newspaper article. Spend 15 minutes on your answer. This article sets out to convince the reader of the dangers of using Bebo (a personal webpage on the Internet). How do presentational details help to achieve this purpose? In your answer write about: the use of headings and other features of layout the use of coloured photographs and images. 3 [10] Answer using Text A. Spend 15 minutes on your answer. This teenage writer has expressed her feelings in a manner which sustains the reader s interest. Consider how this has been achieved by commenting on: the lively, personal nature of the writing the variety in sentence structure and the use of paragraphing. 4 [10] Answer using Text A and only the written material from the newspaper article. Spend 15 minutes on your answer. These texts express very different views about using Bebo. Compare and contrast how the writers have put forward their points of view.
