Open Water is one of the scariest movies I ve ever seen! It s not EEEEEK scary like Jaws. It s more frightening than that! The reason is very simple it is a horror story that could happen to any scuba diver! Okay, so I m a bit of a wimp when it comes to horror movies, but in real life I think you d say I m fairly hairy-chested. About a 7 on a scale of 1 10, where 1 is the kind of person who finds a visit from the postman terrifying and 10 belongs to people who like skydiving off suspension bridges. I ski, snowboard, surf and occasionally climb. And I most definitely enjoy scuba-diving which brings me back to Open Water. This film follows the progress of a scuba-diving accident and the dangers are utterly real: jellyfish, sharks and deep, icy water. If you number yourself among the hundreds and thousands of people in this country who have ever considered diving, watching Open Water may well put you off the idea for good! What I found so disturbing was the fact that the disaster it portrays is totally avoidable. The film describes the fate of an American couple who sign up for an offshore diving trip. To keep track of everyone, the dive leader operates a rather basic head count as people get on and off the boat but there s a moment of confusion and he makes a mistake. Nobody has really noticed the couple on the way out, and nobody misses them when they head back. Safety checks on the dive boat are careless. It s not cleaned until the following morning, and it s only then that the couple s clothing is discovered: 24 hours after the dive! Sounds impossible? Well, no, because the movie is based on a real incident. Back in January 1998, two divers were left behind, somewhere in the ocean off the Great Barrier Reef. The couple were never found. Scratch the surface of the dive industry and you ll find lots more sloppy measures: badly maintained equipment, poor dive briefings, lazy head counts. Richard Scarsbrook is an advanced diving instructor: Most diving operators are fairly well organised, he said, but I ve seen plenty of examples of bad practice. He recalled the time he was sitting on a dive boat when two unknown divers clambered aboard. They had run out of air, and had no idea where their dive boat was, or even what it was called, he said. Eventually our crew took them back to their boat. Nobody had missed them. All this does not mean that safety standards in the scuba-diving industry are on the verge of collapse. Most dive centres are well-run, efficient organisations devoted to the care of their customers. But some are not! And when you re dealing with a hostile environment like the open ocean, that s not especially good news! My aim is not to put you off a diving holiday altogether quite the reverse. All the same, none of us should approach such an adventure with our eyes closed. Be sensible. Check qualifications, look for signs that a dive centre is well run and never be scared to ask questions. If you don t get a decent answer, move on to somewhere else until you do. That s if you want to survive and come home alive. S 6/05 1400 302507(68) [Turn over
