East Germans could travel freely into West Berlin and, if they wished, they need never return home. Berlin was a hole in the Iron Curtain. West Berlin was also ideally situated for spreading anti-Soviet propaganda and for spying on East Germany. Khrushchev put pressure on Kennedy to do a deal. However Kennedy stood firm and Khrushchev was forced to find a solution to the problem of West Berlin. On the morning of 13th August 1961 East German soldiers erected a barbed wire fence along the border between East and West Berlin, stopping all movement between the sectors. It was quickly replaced by a concrete wall which became a symbol of communist oppression. Source: Superpower Rivalry, Laura Kwasniewska, Colourpoint 1997 G462FH6 1963 2 Source C: US President John F. Kennedy, speaking about West Berlin West Berlin has many roles. It is more than a show case of liberty, an island of freedom in a communist sea. It is more than a link with the free world, a light of hope behind the Iron Curtain, an escape hatch for refugees. West Berlin has become the resting place of Western courage. We cannot and will not permit the Communists to drive us out of West Berlin. We will take all measures necessary to protect it. Source: Adapted from Modern World History, Ben Walsh, John Murray, 1996 Source D: The Russian Government s explanation for the building of the Berlin Wall The Western Powers use Berlin as a centre for spying on East Germany. In no other part of the world are so many spies to be found. The Western Powers smuggle their agents into East Berlin for all kinds of trouble: recruiting spies, provoking trouble and deliberately destroying industry. This wall presents all working people of East Germany with a way to block this activity so that reliable safeguards and effective control will be established around West Berlin including its border into East Berlin.
