Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : 1 Space is never a constraint for gardening enthusiasts. Those with green fingers can always create their little haven, be it on the ground or atop a multi-storey house. Some of the best gardens are those suspended between the land and the sky. For people living on the upper floors of multi-storey blocks, call it a little paradise or a heavenly oasis, their garden is a cherished possession. Pressure of burgeoning population has forced cities to adopt vertical development. But that does not mean that people living in higher storeys are deprived of the pleasures of their own gardens. Necessity is the mother of invention and so the terrace garden culture is catching the imagination of gardening freaks. 2 Leakage below and seepage through walls are the biggest apprehensions. Exposure to the vagaries of weather is another hurdle. Thus creating and maintaining a terrace garden is certainly a challenge. Keep in mind that you cannot create such a garden overnight. It needs immaculate planning regarding leakages below, the weight the roof can take, selection of plants, planting material, the medium in which the plants are planted, garden decoration, garden furniture and above all your own imagination. 3 Leakage below the garden could be due to various reasons. Lack of water-proofing, selecting plants with spreading roots or even something like creation of space between bricks by ants. Leakage is mostly found in electric installations below. If you have taken care to provide effective water-proofing by spreading tar or bitumen on the garden floor, then there should be no problems. It is also essential to consider the weight-bearing capacity of the roof-top here. To lighten the load, use pots made of wooden material, aluminium, plastic, fibre glass etc. 4 Try to provide the garden with a bamboo fence as a wind barrier. This is also useful as a shade and you could keep shade-loving plants under it. Net shades are available in different colours; these cut light to different intensities and can be used overhead by fastening with hooks. You could remove these shades in winter. Winter is a special time for such gardens : the sun is mild and the range of flowers tremendous. 1/1/NE 2 20 8 1.1 Complete the sentences given below. (a) 1 8=8 Terrace garden culture is catching the imagination of garden freaks as ___________________________________________________________ . (f) Usage of ____________________________________________________ can reduce the weight to be borne by the roof. (g) Net shades are useful ___________________________________________________________ . (h) Bamboo fence acts as ___________________________________________________________ . 1/1/NE 3 P.T.O. 2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : 1 While conducting a workshop in a school, I was shocked to see that children were punished if they drew mountains without a scale. Each hill had to be of the same size and if any student looked out of the window and drew the landscape as it appeared before his eyes, he was given a zero by the drawing master. In India, once art and life flowed in one graceful balanced line, but now there is a total neglect of art in education. According to Indian classical tradition, a person was considered properly educated and cultured only if he or she was fully knowledgeable about all the sixty-four arts listed in the scriptures. 2 Today there is an urgent need to reintroduce art education in school curriculum. All children have a vivid imagination which makes them natural artists. Unless this skill is allowed to grow it will never reach its potential. Most children become conscious of their artistic skills after the age of eight. Till then they draw and paint with immense enthusiasm and are confident about their art. Like seedlings they need to be protected and sheltered at this stage. An insensitive remark kills this budding talent and the child will never be interested in art again. 3 Creativity is a misunderstood word. Creativity in education is even more ambiguous. The aim of art activities is not to make the child an artist. In fact, most children will not be interested in professional careers as painters and will choose more conventional professions, but a good art education will help the child to grow into a more sensitive adult. It will enable him to acquire knowledge on a different plane, develop communication skills and express ideas through non-verbal means, since visual art is a highly effective tool to communicate in an abstract and multi-dimensional way. It will help the child to look at his world with new eyes and develop keen powers of observation. 4 Art activities need not always be isolated. There are many meaningful ways of integrating visual art experiences with the study of other disciplines. Language, science, maths and even basic hygiene can be taught through creative art workshops. Original thinking, diversity of creative expression and freedom of expression will enhance the learning process and allow the child to experience art at its best and most rewarding form. It is the responsibility of teachers, artists and parents to ensure that even the most simple art activity is carried out with care to enable our children to grow into good human beings. 1/1/NE 4 12 2.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage complete the following summary with only one word in each blank.
