The paper that four people use in a year weighs as much as a big car. To make all that paper we use more than a billion trees. It takes years for a tree to grow enough to be made into a new paper. And it takes many forests to make all the paper we use and throw away. Wouldn t it be great if old paper could be turned back into new paper ? Then we would have more trees and a green world. We can make that happen. There is a way. We can recycle our paper. If everyone in India recycles their Sunday newspaper (including the comics), we would save 500,000 trees every week. All kinds of paper cereal boxes note paper, bags, newspapers and so on can be recycled. The process is simple and everyone can do it. 2/1/NE (150 words) 1 P.T.O. It seems to move very fast but its movements are very deceptive. When it moves it has swift wave-like motions of its body, but it only crawls along the ground. Its speed, then, is no more than the speed of a man s walk. On a clear road or path which is free from obstacles only two or three species of snakes can hope to catch up with a human being. The snake may, however, have an advantage inside a jungle. There the thorny bushes check the movements of a man. But in such places also the footsteps of a man are usually more than enough to warn snakes to keep away. Snakes do not have ears as we have but they can feel some vibrations of the ground through their bodies. They thus get an early warning of danger. (150 words) 2.1 Answer the following questions briefly : (a) 1 (b) What is deceptive about it ? 1 (c) How is the speed of a man compared to that of a snake ? 1 (d) How many species of snakes can hope to catch up with a man ? 1 (e) How does a snake have an advantage over a man inside a jungle ? 1 (f) 3. Road accidents are killing about 100,000 Indians every year and seriously injuring more than a million. Years ago a study found that road accidents cost the country around Rs. 55,000 crore every year. But to know the real cost of unsafe roads, one needs to know the suffering of someone who has lost a dear one in a road crash. 2/1/NE 2 8 The number of accidental deaths depends on many factors which can be categorized under three broad heads human, vehicle and equipment, and environment. The drivers are found overtaking illegally and over-speeding in various situations. In cities they are seen ignoring their respective lanes and pedestrian walkways. Vehicle designs are faulty. They are devoid of crash protection. Road construction and engineering also add to the problem. Traffic signals are unreadable. Bus lanes are unmarked. Rescue facilities and first-aid skills are not readily available. In order to reduce fatal accidents there has to be a focus on all the three factors.
