Biographical Sketch of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Eminence Birth details Achievements Death One of the most prominent leaders of Indian freedom struggle, Subhash Chandra Bose was affectionately called Netaji. He was born in Cuttack, Orissa, on 23 January 1897. He was an Indian nationalist whose defiant patriotism made him a hero in India, but whose attempt during World War II to rid India of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Japan left a troubled legacy. Deeply moved by the Jalianwala Bagh massacre, he gave up his career in the civil services to overthrow the British Empire from India. His famous motto was Give me blood and I will give you freedom. However the defeat of Japan and Germany in the Second World War forced the INA to retreat and it could not achieve its objective. Subhash Chandra Bose was reportedly killed in an air crash over Taipei, Taiwan (Farmosa) on 18 August 1945.
