Geography Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 80 Self Assessment Paper PART I ICSE Solutions 2 1. (a) The Prime Meridian, together with 180 longitude usually divides the earth into the Eastern and the Western Hemisphere. (b) (i) SIAL: Silica and Aluminum (ii) NIFE: Nickel and Iron (c) Dynamic Metamorphism occurs when the transformation of rocks takes place mainly because of high pressure at great depths within the earth s crust. (d) Magma contains silicate material, water vapours and gases. (e) Dunes are found in the tropical deserts of Asia and Africa. (f) Ozone is a form of oxygen. It is present in significant amounts in the earth s atmosphere. (g) The Equator belt experiences high temperatures throughout the year. Thus, the air gets heated, expands and rises, leading to lowering of density. Thus, the pressure is low in polar regions, the cold heavy air is dense and so pressure is high. (h) The pollutants that can be degraded by biological or microbial actions are called as biodegradable pollutants. Example: Domestic garbage (i) Radiations from nature are: (i) Solar radiations (ii) Terrestrial radiations (j) The semi nomadic people of the Tundra region are called as Eskimos. They are found in Alaska, Greenland and northern Canada. OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, Geography, Class - IX 2 2. (b) (i) (e) (f) (h) (a) . .. (c) .. (d) (j) Tropical monsoon Tropical marine Map not to scale (g) PART II 3. (a) The two points through which the axis passes are known as the North Pole and South Pole. (b) The dates when the Equinox occurs are 21st March and 23rd September. (c) The Bedford Level Experiment was performed in order to show that the earth was spherical. Three poles of the same length were fixed at intervals of 5 kms. It was ensured that the poles had the same height above the water in the canal. When the poles were viewed from one end, the middle pole looked slightly higher than the other two poles. This was a clear proof that the earth was spherical because had the earth been a flat surface, no difference in the height of the poles would have been observed. Answering Tip Diagram should be Made when answering this question. (d) (i) Someone crossed the International Date Line from east: The person will be one day ahead due to an addition of 24 hours. (ii) Someone crossed the International Date Line from: The person will be one day behind as there will be a deduction of 24 hours. Commonly Made Error The students interchange the statements making the answer incorrect. 4. (a) The two forces that lead to the formation of relief features are: (i) Orogenic Forces (ii) Epeirogenic Forces Solutions 3 (b) (i) Calcarious Sedimentary Marine Rocks: These are formed by the deposition of shells and skeletons of various sea organisms. (ii) Carbonaceous Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks are formed by the vegetation that remain buried for a very long time deep inside the Earth (c) (i) Seismograph is an instrument used to measure the direction of movement of shock waves and their passage at a particular point. (ii) It has a pen attached to it. The pen vibrates with the earthquake waves, recording their movements on a moving strip of paper. It also calculates the difference in the arrival of P and S waves. (d) Three weather conditions that are necessary for the decomposition of rocks are: (i) Change in temperature (ii) Moisture- humid air (iii) Precipitation 5. (a) Two landforms that are created in the upper course of the river are: (i) V-shaped valleys (ii) Waterfall (b) In its lower course, the river divides itself into several distributaries at its mouth. This is due to the deposition of sediments over a large area near the mouth. The deposition over a large area results in a triangular shaped formation called as delta. Example, Ganga, Brahmaputra (c) Three characteristics of metamorphic rocks are: (i) They are formed due to change in texture and composition of preexisting rocks. (ii) They are harder and more compact than their original form. (iii) Most of them do not allow water to seep into. Answering Tip The formation of the rocks should be mentioned while stating the characteristics. (d) (i) Earthquake (ii) Friction between tectonic plates causes an earthquake. (iii) Bhuj, in Gujarat Answering Tip The exact place of the occurrence should be mentioned. 6. (a) Tides have a regular rhythmic motion due to the gravitational attraction exerted upon the Earth by the moon and the sun. (b) The average difference in water level between high and low tide at any place is the amplitude (range) of the tide. The tidal range is usually 1m. to 3m. But it differs from day to day depending on the position of the sun and moon. (c) Spring Tide Neap tide Spring Tides are high tides Neap tides are low tide When the Earth, Moon and Sun are almost in the same straight line, spring tides of the greatest range are produced The sun and the moon are at right angles to each other, they negate each other s pull and thus we have the lowest tides. Occurs twice during the lunar month, just after the New Moon and the Full Moon Occurs at the time of the first and the last quarters of the moon. (d) The effects of tides are: (i) Tides help in the movement of debris into the sea. (ii) A strong tidal current prevents the formation of deltas but they are useful in building the lower floodplains of rivers. OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, Geography, Class - IX 4 (iii) In cold countries tides bring in salt water and by their constant motion prevent harbours from becoming icebound. 7. (a) Warming of the atmosphere can lead to a considerable rise in the moisture capacity. While the troposphere warms up, the stratosphere will cool down. This would cause major changes in the precipitation pattern. Rainfall is expected to increase in higher altitudes in both summer and winter and in southern and eastern Asia in summer. However, winter rainfall may decrease at lower altitudes. (b) (i) Equatorial Low Pressure Belts: This low pressure belt extends from 0 TO 5 North and South of Equator. (ii) Circum-polar Low Pressure Belts: These belts located between 60 and 65 in each hemisphere are known as Circum polar Low Pressure Belts. (c) Three characteristics of Troposphere are: (i) The air is thin, cold and dry. (ii) The ozone layer lies within the stratosphere. (iii) Due to absence of water vapours, it is ideal long distance flights of jet aircrafts. (d) (i) Absolute Humidity: It is the measure of the actual amount of water vapour in the air, at a given of temperature. (ii) Insolation: The amount of solar energy received by the earth is called insolation. (iii) Atmospheric Pressure: It is the force per unit area exerted against a surface by the weight of the air above the surface. 8. (a) (i) An increase in the mean temperature of the earth is called as global warming. (ii) Excessive vehicular emissions and cfc emitting gadget is the major cause of global warming. (b) Factors favouring evaporation are: (i) Humidity : Dry air promotes evaporation as it has more capacity to hold water vapour. (ii) Supply of Heat: The greater the heat of the water surface and air above it, the greater will be the rate of evaporation. Answering Tip Only the names of the clouds should be mentioned. The characteristics or any feature need not be mentioned. (c) Three parts of a solar radiation are: (i) White Light (ii) Infrared radiation (iii) Ultraviolet radiation (d) Characteristics of anticyclones: (i) Lithosphere: Solid state (ii) Atmosphere: Gaseous state (iii) Hydrosphere: Liquid state 9. (a) (i) The atmospheric pressure is highest at the sea level. (ii) A cyclone is a low pressure system into which the pressure is lowest in the center. (b) Ions reflect radio waves back to the earth s surface. This enables wireless communication. (c) (i) Cyclonic Rainfall (ii) Variable winds (iii) Terrestrial radiation Commonly Made Error The students write incorrect terms. Solutions 5 (d) Frigid zone Frigid zone Answering Tip Appropriate location of each zone should be mentioned. 10. (a) Two causes of radioactive pollution: (i) Establishment of nuclear power plants (ii) Mining and refining of radioactive substances like uranium, thorium etc. (b) Two alternate of fossil fuels: (i) Solar energy (ii) Tidal energy (c) Three benefits of car pooling: (i) It reduces air pollution as the less number of cars are present on the road. (ii) It avoids problem like traffic jams etc. (iii) Car pooling also helps in saving of petrol and diesel. (d) Advantages of creating a No Smoking Zone : (i) It reduces air pollution. (ii) It discourages passive smoking (iii) It reduces any chances of accidental fires. 11. (a) The two characteristics of vegetation of the equatorial region are: (i) Tropical rainforest (ii) Ferns and shrubs/creepers and climbers (b) The two primitive tribes of Tropical deserts are: (i) Bushmen (ii) Bindibu (c) Three European countries of the Mediterranean region are: (i) Bulgaria (ii) France (iii) Italy (d) The three cash crops grown in the tropical monsoon region are: (i) Cotton (ii) Sugarcane (iii) Tea qqq
