Time : 2 Hours Maximum Marks : 80 ENGLISH paper-1 ICSE Self Assessment Paper Solutions of Question Paper 2 Answer 1 [20] (a) The water was freezing. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and jumped in. Although the plunge was shocking, I made sure I didn t open my mouth. That would be foolish. Ahead of me, I could see the arms of at least three swimmers as they chopped through the water. I wondered how fast they were. I would have to be the fastest if I wanted to win. I had trained for this my whole life. This is the Junior Olympics and I am an Indian, representing my nation. The journey here was difficult. I almost gave up many times but a voice inside me told me to keep going. I had the best coaches and the most supportive parents. They had started off my passion for swimming by introducing me to the swimming pool when I was still a baby. I learnt to swim and walk at nearly the same time. My favourite movie as a child was The Little Mermaid . Everything in my life pushed me towards swimming. Now was the moment that really mattered. As I came up for air, I pushed ahead with renewed determination. I reached the far end of the pool and turned around. I was neck to neck with the lead swimmers. As the water rushed past me, I put every bit of strength I could use my arms and legs. Boom! I touched the wall and the crowd exploded. I pulled myself over the edge of the pool and looked around at the scoreboard. By about two microseconds, I was beaten. Second place. Silver. The tears flowed down my face. I had thought I would win. I walked to my coach who beamed at me. You did your best and I am proud of you. Second place is very good, Punya. It was a tough competition. I smiled at him but I wasn t feeling happy. He was just saying those words to make me feel better. The rest of the day was difficult. Everyone congratulated me, but I felt like a failure. On the flight back home, I watched movies nonstop. I was received at the airport by a large welcoming committee from my school and neighborhood with banners and balloons. The press wanted me to say a few words. I felt like an actress as I performed for everyone. The next day, I walked to the shop at the end of my street. I was lost in thoughts of disappointment, when I felt a hand tug at my sleeve. It was the little girl who lived in the hut on the other end of the street. That area was inhabited by daily labourers and maid servants who barely earned enough money to survive. Sister, said the little girl, I saw you on TV. She smiled shyly. I smiled back at her. Yes, that was me, I replied. She stammered, I swim also. My father takes me to the beach on Sundays and I swim a lot. I want to swim like you, sister. I want to be just like you! As I looked at her innocent face, all the sadness of the last two days washed away from me. Come to my house tomorrow and I will take you to the pool. Ask your mother for permission, okay? The little girl ran away happily. I stared after her as my heart filled with a strange emotion. It was pride. So what if I hadn t won the gold medal? I had won the admiration of a tiny young girl who wanted to be me. I had inspired her and that is worth all the gold in the world! Answering Tips Imagination and humour add flavour to a well-written story. Editing your story will help you add more details even as you correct your mistakes. 2 OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, ENGLISH PAPER 1 (LANGUAGE), Class-IX Commonly Made Errors Many candidates used very formal language in their stories, which made it difficult to read. (b) I was blessed to be born into a family that was curious about nature. My parents and siblings raised all sorts of birds and small animals in the house. So even when I was a baby, I was used to them. They also loved plants, so I was surrounded by greenery. My room was no exception. Right by the window, was a large table, covered in multiple plastic sheets. Most of the surface was covered with potted plants. Next to the window was a bare spot for me to sit. I spent many hours there, sitting by the plants, breathing the fresh air and looking out through the window. I lived in a desert country in the Middle East, which meant that there weren t many trees in the landscape. There was a row of date palms dividing the road into opposite lanes. As far as the eye could see, it was an open land with buildings here and there. A beautiful white and green mosque stood at the extreme right. At the other end were two schools facing each other. During the day there wasn t much to look at; just the cars passing by and the heat of the sun creating mirages on the black asphalt roads. As evening came around, all the buildings would be lit up with lights. Cars would pull in to the empty areas and soon, a sea of cars would cover the ground. This was my favourite time of day because of all the busy people getting out of their cars with smiling faces ready to do some shopping. Just below my window, I could see children who lived in the neighbourhood coming out to play. Every child had a bicycle with tassels and stickers all over. They would ride them proudly around the buildings. Their mothers with their little brothers and sisters would gather around in groups and exchange news. In the distance, more shops would open after their afternoon break. The street food shops serving pizza, bread, sandwiches and kebabs could be seen all the way from my window. They usually had a long queue outside them every evening. As night approached, people would return with shopping bags and the children with balloons and toys. One by one, the cars would leave and the grounds would become empty again. As the prayer from the mosque filled the air, I would watch till the stars emerged in the clear sky. The breeze would become cool. The street lamps arranged in perfect rows would come alive. Young people crowded into their cars would pass by, whooping and shouting as they had their heads out of the windows, the music blaring loudly. Soon, everything would become quiet. I would day dream and imagine being part of an Arabian Nights story. My imagination would take over as the city slept soundly. When I decided to get to bed myself, I would put my head out the window and send a silent prayer to the heavens. Life through my window kept me entertained for so many days. Even after we moved, I never forgot the magic of that window and the world beyond it. Answering Tips Make sure you organize your points so that the related ones are in the same paragraph. Commonly Made Errors The writing did not unfold naturally. Some candidates jumped back and forth in the sequence of events which was confusing to read. (c) It was a typical Sunday afternoon. Very few people were on the roads because they were all napping to escape the afternoon heat. I hated sleeping during the day, so I usually wandered around the garden kicking a ball, occasionally peeking out through the gate to see what was happening on the road. Most of the time, one or two street vendors would pass by. A gang of street dogs would run along, searching for cool, shady spots to rest in. I was tired of playing with the ball, so I climbed onto the wide compound wall and sat down on it. I had a piece of chalk, so I doodled a bit on the wall in front of me. An old man shuffled past me on the way to his house at the end of the road. I called out a greeting but he was too deaf to hear me. In the distance, a woman approached. I didn t know who she was so I went back to doodling. When the scream came, I was so shocked that I dropped the chalk and sat up straight. The woman, who was about forty feet away, was clutching her neck and screaming. She was also pointing at a young man running away from her. In an instant, I understood what had happened. The news was full of stories like this. Chain-snatching had become common. I jumped off the wall, opened the gate and quickly brought my cycle out. I jumped on and started to chase the running man. He didn t know I was doing so because I was very far behind. I made Solutions 3 sure I didn t get too close because I didn t want him to see me. He kept turning into lanes, going left and right in a random way. But he had a destination in mind. It stopped and saw him run into a community shelter for the homeless. I turned around and cycled back as fast as I could. By the time I reached my street, it was full of people. In the centre of the crowd was the woman who was robbed. She was crying and wailing. Next to her were two policemen who were trying to calm her down and get her to speak. Almost all my neighbours were there, talking about the crime and shaking their heads. My parents were there too. When they saw me, they stared in astonishment. They had not realized that I had left the house. I smiled at them but I went straight up to the policemen. At first, they wouldn t even look at me because to them, I was just a young girl. But I finally managed to get their attention. I described the chase and how the man had entered the shelter. Pin drop silence. All the adults stared at me as they tried to understand that I had been daring enough to chase a robber all by myself. My mother, in particular, was shocked. She wanted to shout at me for putting myself at risk, but she couldn t. The policemen smiled at me and asked me to lead them to the robber. I climbed into one of their jeeps happily and we took off. When we entered the shelter, it took a moment for me to find the man in the mass of people who were sitting and lying around. But I spotted him in the far corner of the room. The policemen asked me to leave and drove me back home because they did not want me to be spotted. My parents were both angry and proud of me, which made them tongue-tied. About an hour later, we got a call from the policemen. They had grabbed the robber and searched him. He had three chains and two rings in his pockets. He was immediately arrested. They thanked me for a job well done. Life went back to normal, although my parents made sure to lock the gate on Sundays. Answering Tips Avoid vague or philosophical comments. The content should be relatable. Although the narrative is a first person account, do not become too moralistic with your language. Commonly Made Errors A few candidates wrote very simplistic stories without specifying a role for themselves in the incident. "Active politicians in India need to retire at the age of sixty". (d) For the statement : Currently, there is no age restriction on practicing politics in India. The state of the country reflects this. Politicians who have held their positions for decades continue to do so. Very few of them have updated their views, beliefs or thinking to the modern age. They respond to problems with their old way of thinking, which is not always appropriate for the times. They are used to doing things the way they have been doing always and do not want to explore other options. Therefore, change happens very slowly. Change is much needed in this country. The younger crop of people who wish to enter politics have fresh ideas but they are not given a chance. Youngsters have grown up with unlimited access to information. The Internet has made youngsters smarter and sharper. They have become savvy with technology; - mobile phones, laptops and tablets have trained them to think quickly and objectively. Youngsters have a global view of life and the world. They are not limited by restrictive thinking in terms of caste or religion. They are ready and desperate to take up positions where they can make a difference and work for the betterment of the country. For these youngsters to come up, the elderly politicians should retire at an appropriate age. Due to their experience and age, they can be helpful as consultants. Corruption is rampant because people in positions of power try to retain it for as long as possible. Many illegal and immoral practices have become common place and accepted. Bribery is the driving force behind many official actions. Youngsters, who have witnessed the suffering because of these practices, want things to change. They have ideas and solutions that are not received. They have no voice when it comes to how the country is run. Another reason for the necessity of the age restriction is health. Vibrant youngsters are full of energy and are willing to travel and meet the public who have problems, to go to the ideators and inventors who can contribute and go to the business people who can uplift the economy. People above sixty need to rest and relax. They need to concentrate on their health and therefore they cannot concentrate on the country at the same time. Sometimes, politicians who are ill to even walk are still in power. They are taken advantage of by corrupt people around them. In the end, the common man continues to suffer. 4 OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, ENGLISH PAPER 1 (LANGUAGE), Class-IX Nature itself works on the principle of evolution. In time, the old has to give way to the new. That is how nature upgrades itself. We should take a lesson from nature and ensure that we too evolve socially. For this to happen, active politicians in the country should not be allowed to be in office beyond the age of sixty. Answering Tips Use words like In addition to , Nevertheless , Moreover etc. when introducing a point. Commonly Made Errors A few candidates expressed their views clearly, but the tone of their arguments was accusatory. The topic should be handled with sensitivity. (e) The kids ran through the streets shouting and hollering at the top of their voices. It s Holi! Holi! Men and women followed them at a slower pace, but they were just as happy. It was the festival of colours and true to its name, no person could be found who wasn t covered with colours. Everyone had handfuls of powder and they chased people in an attempt to smear their faces. Young or old, no one could resist being part of the festivities. Little Pratheek, who was only four years old, clutched his grandpa s hand tightly as he walked with him. His cute little cheeks were red and yellow. His hair was a bright blue. He laughed and jumped whenever someone came towards him. Many of the shops were closed. In a dark corner in front of a shop, sat a middle-aged man. His eyes were sad, but he looked at all the people with a small smile on his face. In all the confusion and noise, no one took notice of him. But Pratheek noticed. He saw the man and wondered who he was. He had never seen him before. Pratheek tugged at his grandfather and pointed to the man. His grandpa knew everything and everyone. He would certainly know this man. But Pratheek s grandpa looked confused. They broke away from the crowd, the old man and the little one went towards the stranger. He saw them coming and looked a bit frightened. Come here, son. Don t be scared Grandpa spoke reassuringly. The man relaxed and got up. He seemed ready to talk. Pratheek listened, but could only understand that the man had travelled a long distance from a village far away. But he had been robbed at the station. He had no money and did not know the address of the place that had promised him a job. He only remembered the name of the road, but didn t know how to get there. His eyes were full of tears as he related his story. He seemed to be a simple man. Grandpa immediately jumped into action. He called his three sons to him and asked him if they knew the road that the man mentioned. Pratheek s father did. They crowded around the man and reassured him that they would take care of him. Since it was a holiday, the plan was to let the man stay with them that day. The next morning, Pratheek, his dad and grandpa got into their jeep with the poor villager. They drove to the street he mentioned and knocked on all the places of business, inquiring if they had promised a job to the man. Finally, the manager at a soft drink labeling firm came forward and said that they had indeed hired him. When he didn t show up for work two days ago, they thought that he had decided not to come. The villager was so thankful that he fell at Grandpa s feet. He had been stranded in a strange city, but he had been shown kindness and compassion. He gave Pratheek a pat on the head and thanked him too. Pratheek s grandpa was moved. He hugged the other man and said in a loving voice, No one is a stranger. In this happy time of celebration, remember that we are all brothers and sisters. Be well. Little Pratheek gazed at his grandpa with admiration. What a good man he was! Pratheek hugged the man too and they left. It was an incident the young boy would remember for the rest of his life. Sir, I recently purchased a large office desk complete with stationary solutions from your store. I paid in full, including the delivery charges for transport to my home office. It was delivered yesterday. I was shocked to see the poor level of protection given to the desk. There was no bubble wrap or any form of packaging material as it was lifted off the truck.
