Time : 2 Hours Maximum Marks : 80 ENGLISH paper-1 ICSE Self Assessment Paper Solutions of Question Paper 1 Answer 1 [20] (a) The entire day was a comedy of errors. I got up early, but I spent so long in the shower that I knew I would be late for school. I pulled on my clothes and ran out of the house but I still missed the school bus. I had to wait fifteen minutes for the public bus. I was annoyed with myself. What made it worse were the stares I received from people at the bus stop and inside the bus. I know my hair was uncombed, but was that any reason to stare at a person? So rude! I rushed into the classroom and huffed up to my desk in a bad mood. The other students were still in the assembly hall, but they would be back any minute now. I decided to sit and relax for a bit. My class teacher entered the room first, glaring at me. The rest of my classmates followed. Thyagu, explain! she said curtly. I stood up and opened my mouth to speak, but there was a sudden explosion of snort, laughs and giggles. Two of my friends fell off their chairs, holding on to their stomachs. I was amazed. Why were they all being so weird? I turned back to my teacher to see that she was facing the white board. Her head was down and her shoulders were moving up and down. I stared at her back and it slowly dawned on me- she was laughing too! One of the girls was pointing at me and she giggled. I looked down at myself and received the biggest shock of all. I was wearing my crisp, white uniform shirt with a red and blue tie, which was perfect. But I was also wearing my pyjama bottoms! The grey one with little horses all over it. In my hurry, I must have grabbed the same pants I had been wearing at night after I got out of the shower! I grinned weakly and waited for the laughter to die down. When my teacher finally turned around, she glared at me again. I m sorry, Ma am, I said, It s an accident. I ll go change into my gym uniform- it s in my locker. Oh no, you won t! You were late by fifteen minutes. You missed the assembly and you showed up in pyjama bottoms. No way are you getting off easy. You ll wear this uniform for the rest of the day! It was a horror movie. Today of all days, I had a timetable that took me out of the classroom often. There was library period, games, physics lab, lunch...everywhere I went people grinned and winked. The 11th standard boys mimicked horses galloping through the corridors. The physics lab technician, who was telling us about the Archimedes Principle, talked about immersing a horse in a tank of water. Everywhere I went, people neighed and trotted. Worst of all, when I passed the staff room, I heard a noise from inside that sounded suspiciously like Giddy-up! When I finally got back home and into my bedroom, I tore off my horse-featured pyjama pants and fell onto my bed. What a day! All because I was rushed through my morning routine! As I stared at the ceiling and said a silent thank you to God that the day was finally over, I added one more thing- I promised myself that I would never put myself in such a position again! Answering Tips Dialogue can help bring the scene alive and make your story lively. Suspense and surprise are important aspects to any good story. 2 OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, ENGLISH PAPER 1 (LANGUAGE), Class-IX Commonly Made Error A few candidates wrote stories that seemed to imitate fairytales, which made them sound childish. (b) Chandigarh has the unique distinction of being the most beautifully planned cities in India. Designed by a French architect named Le Corbusier, Jawaharlal Nehru s dream city is also the place that I call home. I can t imagine living anywhere else. My whole family lives within the radius of one block. We also have a tradition. Everyone above 5 years of age participates in it. We call it The Fazil Family Walk. At about 5.30 every morning, we put on our walking shoes and start from home. As we pass each of our relatives house, more of them join us. Within 15 minutes, the entire family is out. In total, that s 23 adults and youngsters. Sometimes, people mistake us for a protest march. Although I love joining in with the joking and gossiping, I usually lag behind everyone. I enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of my beautiful city in the morning. The crisp, somewhat cool air gently blows over me as I step ahead. The huge, green trees that flank the roads let their leaves float gently to the ground. When I look up, I can see the rising sun filtering through the canopy. The play of light and dark is fascinating. The early morning vendors pass us in the streets hawking their wares. Milk men honk their horns impatiently, encouraging the ladies of the houses to come quickly and get their milk. Vegetable sellers arrange their produce neatly on their pushcarts as they bargain with their customers. Mushrooms, fresh mushrooms , shout the middle aged men who whiz by on their scooters. As the morning deepens, we pass other groups of walkers and joggers. My favourite moment of the day is when we pass that corner of the park where the laughter club gathers every morning. Men and women clap and fall about laughing and bellowing. Their laughter is so contagious that everyone who passes by giggles and laughs with them. The smiles usually widen when we pass Habib Bhai s biriyani centre. He usually empties all the previous day s pots and pans onto banana leaves for the street dogs to eat. The aromatic smell of spices fills the air and awakens our digestive systems. He waves to us as we pass by as we are loyal customers. By this time, the sun is usually higher in the sky and we begin to feel the heat. When we finally turn the last corner to head back home, the group slowly reduces. I walk into my home thoroughly refreshed and ready to face the day. There s nothing as invigorating as a morning walk through the streets of beautiful Chandigarh. Answering Tip Develop keen observational skills by practicing how to describe people and events often. Commonly Made Error Some candidates loaded their compositions with adjectives and adverbs making it clich d. (c) I was standing by the side of the highway wondering what I was going to do. It was almost 9 p.m. and none of the buses would stop for a single passenger. As another colourful bus passed me by, I felt frustrated. The reason I was there that late was because of me. I had no one else to blame. I just have too much ambition. I am also quite competitive. So when our faculty told us that it was up to us to find sponsors for our department s annual day celebrations, I decided that I would bring in the biggest sponsors. So, after classes each day, I set out to scout the factories and companies in and around my city. Sometimes, I had a group of friends with me, sometimes I was alone. Today, my friends had gotten tired and left, but I refused to go. There was one more place I had to approach. The company was medium sized but I had heard that the CEO was one of the richest men in India. And he was currently in the city to evaluate the employees of this company. Two hours after I walked in, I walked out with a bounce in my step. I had done it again! Biggest sponsor ever! However, I could not find any means to get back into the city. This is why I was standing in that spot at 9 p.m. Finally, I stuck out my thumb out. I was that desperate. Almost immediately, a car pulled over. The driver was a middle-aged woman. Her many bags were in the passenger seat, so I got into the back. Next to me, near the other window was a pile of clothes. At least, that s what I thought at first. When the pile of clothes moved, I nearly jumped out of my window. As I looked wide-eyed at it, I discovered Solutions 3 that it was actually an old woman wearing a lot of different pieces of clothing. Her little wrinkled face was almost completely covered in a hood. A strong smell of herbs and oils wafted from her. As I gaped at her, I noticed that the woman on the driving seat was looking at me in the rear view mirror and smiling. Horror filled me again and my imagination took flight. Were these two vampires who were looking for fresh blood? Witches in search of a medium sized skull? Was this my last day on Earth? But the ladies did not pounce on me. They were silent for a while and I calmed down. Eventually, I asked the driver where they were travelling from. She told me that they were returning home from an ayurvedic health treatment for her mother. I was relieved! When they finally dropped me off, I was able to smile at them and thank them for their kindness. They told me to be careful and avoid hitchhiking. They were quite sweet. As I walked away, I was amused. What an experience! Who would have thought that two such strange looking women could be so helpful? Sometimes those we mistake to be witches are just angels in disguise. Answering Tips Try adding humorous quotations or quips to add liveliness to your narrative. The characters, scene and setting should be outlined in such a way that makes it easy to visualize.. Commonly Made Error A few candidates did not understand how hitchhiking works. They wrote about public transportation and about getting lost. "The downward trend in health among the population today is our own responsibility". (d) For the statement : A person s health is a reflection of their surroundings. In a clean and hygienic environment, people thrive and reach to their full potential. We are healthy and active. But nowadays, a clean and hygienic environment is only a dream. In reality, we live in a world that is being suffocated by our own wastes. Pollution is at its peak today. The air we breathe has toxic contaminants from our factories and machinery. The water we drink is full of poisonous materials that we have dumped into rivers and seas. The soil is so full of chemicals from pesticides, fertilizers and garbage dumps that the plants produce food that can hardly be called natural. All this is what touches and enters our bodies. It is no surprise that there is a downward trend in health these days. The number of diseases, their variations and strength have increased in these last few decades. Medicine has become one of the most profitable businesses in modern times. This phenomenon is directly and indirectly due to the modern way of living. Disrespect and destruction of our surroundings have led to this sorry state. This is not due to the actions of a few commercial or corporate giants alone. The responsibility lies with every individual. When a person throws a plastic wrapper or bag on to the road, they contribute to it. When a person stands at a market stall and demands more produce for lesser prices, he pushes farmers to use fertilizers and increase their yields. When a person drives a vehicle which releases fumes above the allowed limit, he contributes to it. Every drop makes an ocean. Every negative action leads to environmental degradation. Every minute, more and more people fall ill. This terrible harm that we are inflicting on ourselves cannot be blamed on anything else. The Earth has its own balance that allows it to heal itself. But humanity is overloading the Earth with its waste and upsetting that balance. As we are also Earth s creatures, dependent on her for our existence, we are actually harming ourselves. Population explosion is yet another factor. We have been selfishly propagating our species at the cost of the lives of countless trees and animals. We may be at the top of the food chain, but if there is no food chain at all, we cannot survive. The most important indicator of this is the number of people surviving on medicines and in hospitals. In conclusion, it is easy to state with conviction that the downwards trend in health among the population today is our own responsibility. Answering Tip Make sure that the first few sentences properly introduce your opinion. Commonly Made Error Some candidates stated their moral views on the topic instead of being objective. 4 OSWAAL ICSE Sample Question Papers, ENGLISH PAPER 1 (LANGUAGE), Class-IX (e) A Path through the woods A path through a forest means different things for different people. For me, it has two sides. On the bright side, it reminds me of the trek that I did in the Himalayan mountain range. There were so many paths that looked like they belonged to a fairytale. Little bubbling streams, waterfalls, exotic birds, trees, shrubs, colourful flowers, huge boulders- these were the incredible sights that dotted the paths through the mountains. Some of the paths were dangerous. One in particular was on the side of a cliff. Its width was roughly one foot, but in some places, the mud had slid down the cliff and it was just half a foot across. If a person slipped, they would fall off the cliff. Though it was dangerous, it was also a thrilling adventure. On the other side, I am reminded of stories of people experiencing frightening events as they walked on such paths in the dark. Real stories of people disappearing are bad enough. However, fiction has really made these forest paths a popular setting for horror stories. I am reminded of Ruskin Bond s short story, The Face in the Dark , in which the protagonist, Mr. Oliver encounters a faceless boy as he walks along a forest path. He dies of shock in the story. As a reader, my heart skipped a beat as well when Mr. Oliver runs into a watchman who has no face also. In many old fairy tales like Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty, the forest path is the background setting. Robert Frost s famous poem The Road not Taken is about a person who stands in a forest. The path he is on diverges into two, but it is not clear which path should be taken. The poet finally decides on the path less travelled, which is a metaphor for being adventurous in life. Paths like these are made when people frequently take the same route to cut through a forest. Tribals and villagers who live by, foraging and gathering wood, usually create these paths. They have a deep knowledge of how to stay safe and find the things they need. These days, children, trek, hike, do nature walks and learn survival techniques as guides and teachers take them on paths like these. The image shown here is beautiful and peaceful. It is a common theme in photography and painting. However, the experience of following a forest trail is always uncommon. Like Robert Frost says in his poem, it is a way that leads on to way. Answering Tip Ask questions about the picture- Who is in it? Why? What could happen there? Commonly Made Error One or two candidates wrote speeches that were inspired by the image but were too long and too far removed from the scope of the question. Answer 2 [10] (a) 53, HRB Layout, 3rd Cross Street, Habruhalli, Nagalore 30th March, 20XX Dear Jacinda, How are you? I hope all is well at home. I know you have been busy shifting to a new house. I can t wait to visit! I have been busy too. You ll be surprised to know that I have been volunteering every weekend this month. It all started on my dad s birthday. He usually likes to do something that contributes to society instead of just having a party. This year, he decided we would go to an old age home with sweets and gifts for the residents. So we loaded up the car with all the stuff we bought and went there just before lunch time. I hadn t been inside an old age home before that. It was heart-breaking. Though the residents are all well cared for and kept active, they have a sadness in their eyes. Most of them are parents who have been abandoned by their children. Can you imagine someone doing that to their own father or mother? I can t. Anyway, I went around, talking to all of them. As you know, all my grandparents passed away before and just after I was born, so I didn t have any idea on how to talk to the elderly. But they made me Solutions 5 feel so comfortable and asked me so many things about my life that I soon opened up to them. They told me about the funny things that happened to them in their lives, as well as some of the sorrowful ones. I felt so much sympathy for them. They do their best but still struggle with everyday things like reading, walking or taking their medication. After I said goodbye, I was very thoughtful. My parents and I had a discussion. We decided that they would take me to the Home every Saturday, where I could interact with and help the old people I d met. So that s how I ended up becoming a volunteer. It has been such an eye-opening experience. It has been rewarding as well, because I feel like I ve become a better, more mature person. One thing I ve realized- they re all so young at heart, like white-haired children. They appreciate the simple joys and comforts that they have. They don t even bear any resentment or anger against their families. There are many lessons to be learnt from them. If you plan on visiting me soon, I d like to take you there. You ll understand what I m talking about then. I also have a few new books and games that I ve been waiting to show you. So, plan a trip soon. Don t forget that you promised to send me pictures of your new room! Write soon! I want to hear all about your new school. Take care, Wasim Answering Tip Create a closing line that expresses a hope of a feeling of gratitude. Commonly Made Error Many candidates used standard phrases that they had memorized. Their letters seem unnatural when read. (b) 5A, 2nd Street Three Sun apartment, Bhandra Nagar, Hyderabad 19th February, 2020 The Editor, LakeView Local Times, Calcutta Sub: Need for a playground in Bhandra Nagar Dear Sir, I am a resident of Bhandra Nagar. My friends and I are active sports people who love to play badminton and cricket whenever we have time. There are many children in the neighbourhood who gather in the evenings to play as well. Currently, we all play on the streets. It is quite dangerous for children to run around on the streets. As you know, not all motorists are responsible drivers. We have had instances when a child has become dangerously close to being run over. It usually happens when a ball is kicked or thrown farther away on to the road and the children run after it. Even for us teenagers, it is highly inconvenient. We have to constantly stop the match and move aside whenever a vehicle passes. Some of the parents don t allow their children outside because they are afraid. They cannot be blamed for being protective. The solution to all these problems lies in getting a new playground for the area. Currently, there is an empty park that has been abandoned for years. The Government has neglected it and kept it locked up. It is overgrown with bushes and had become a trash dumping ground. If this park is renovated and opened to us, we would be able to play in it safely. I hope you ll publish a report about this issue and bring it to the attention of the officials concerned. It is high time that something was done to enrich our neighbourhood. Thank you!
