[2] (ii) For the same kinetic energy of a body, what should be the change in its velocity if its mass becomes four times? [2] (iii) (a) On oxidising a radioactive substance, what change would you expect to take place in the nature of its radioactivity and why? (iv)A man standing 25 m away from a wall produces a sound and receives the reflected sound. A weight of 100gf is suspended at 5 cm mark. Where must a weight of 80 gf be suspended to balance the metre rod? [3] SECTION B (Attempt any four questions from this Section) Question 4 (i) By using a block and tackle, a man can raise a load of 72 kgf by applying an effort of 2 x 107 dyne. (Take g= 10N/kg) Find: [3] (a) the mechanical advantage (b) the man s useful power output if he raises the load through 20m in 1.5 minute (ii) State three differences between a Nuclear Fission and a Nuclear Fission. [3] (iii) Figure shows a glass slab of uniform thickness lying horizontally. (Refractive indices of glass and water are 3/2 and 4/3) Above it is a layer of water. A ray of light AB is incident on the lower surface of glass which is refracted successively at B, C and D, the points where it crosses the interfaces. [3] (iii) Three resistors are connected to a 6 V battery as shown in the figure. Calculate: (a) the equivalent resistance of the circuit. (b) the total current in the circuit (c) the potential difference across the 7.2 ohm resistor (d) the potential difference across the 8 ohm resistor. [4] Question 6 (i) (a)Ultraviolet bulbs have quartz envelope instead of glass. Why? (b) Which radiation can be detected by a silver chloride solution? (c) Overexposure of which radiation causes skin cancer? [3] (ii) The diagram shows a wave of frequency of 50 Hz. The numbers on the diagram represent distance in cm. Find: [3] (a) Wavelength (b) Amplitude (c) Velocity (iii) (a) Name the two factors on which the magnitude of induced e.m.f. depends. (b) In the following diagram, an arrow shows the motion of the coil towards the bar magnet. (1) State in which direction the current flows in the coil, A to B or B to A? (2) Name the law used to arrive at the conclusion. [4] Question 7 (i) (a) What happens to the resistivity of a semiconductor with the increase in temperature? (b)What happens to the specific resistance of a conductor if its length is doubled? (c)Name a substance whose specific resistance remains almost unchanged with the increase in its temperature. Question 8 (i)(a) Which of the two wires, copper or nichrome of similar dimensions would you use for the electric heater element? Give a reason for your answer. (b)Two fuse wires of the same length are rated 5A and 20 A. Which of the two wires is thicker and why? [3] (ii) A lens of focal length 15 cm forms an image on the screen of size three times that of the object. (a) What kind of lens is this? (b) Find the position of the object and the position of the screen. [3] (iii) The diagram alongside shows a light source P embedded in a rectangular glass block ABCD of critical angle 42o. [4] (a) Copy the diagram and show the final path of the ray of light. (b) What is the angle of incidence at the surface BC? (c) What is the angle of refraction at the surface CD? Question 9 (i) Tony wants to connect a fuse to his oven. He wants to control the oven from two different locations. Shown alongside is his circuit diagram. [3] (a) Which one of the two, A or B should be a live wire? (b) In the event of an overload, will the fuse serve its purpose? Give a reason for your answer. (ii) (a) A coin kept inside water ( = 4/3), when viewed from air in a vertical direction, appears to be raised by 3 mm. Find the depth of the coin in water. (b) How is the critical angle related to the refractive index of a medium? [3] (iii) (a) Complete the following diagram of the figure of a transformer and name the parts labelled A and B.
