[5] Question 4 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: Bront Sisters: Literary Legends of the 19th Century The Bront sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne stand among the most celebrated literary figures of the 19th century. Born to an Anglican clergyman, Patrick Bront , in the remote Yorkshire village of Haworth, the sisters grew up in an environment marked by both intellectual stimulation and familial tragedy. Their enduring works, characterized by passion, complex characters, and a deep connection to the natural world, have left an indelible mark on English literature. The Bront siblings were largely self-educated, drawing inspiration from their father s extensive library and their own imaginative games. Their early lives were marked by sorrow; their mother died when they were young, followed by the deaths of their two older sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, during childhood. This left Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and their brother, Branwell, to bond deeply and create intricate fantasy worlds, which would later fuel their literary careers. Charlotte Bront (1816 1855) is best known for her groundbreaking novel Jane Eyre (1847). The story of an independent and morally strong young woman navigating societal constraints resonated deeply with readers and established Charlotte as a pioneer of the proto-feminist novel. Her other works, including Shirley and Villette, continue to explore themes of individuality, gender roles, and emotional resilience. Emily Bront (1818 1848) authored the singular masterpiece Wuthering Heights (1847), a dark and passionate tale of love, revenge, and the haunting connection between the characters and the rugged Yorkshire moors. The novel s unorthodox structure, morally ambiguous characters, and intense emotions initially divided critics but later secured its place as one of the greatest works of English literature. Emily s poetic brilliance also shines through in her poetry, much of which reflects her love for nature and the wildness of the human spirit. 2 of 5 Anne Bront (1820 1849), the youngest of the sisters, is often overshadowed by Charlotte and Emily but is nonetheless a remarkable writer in her own right. Her novels Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall address themes of social injustice, the oppression of women, and moral integrity with a level of realism and boldness ahead of their time. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, in particular, is regarded as an early feminist text for its unflinching depiction of marital abuse and a woman s fight for autonomy. The Bront s initially published their works under male pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell to navigate the gender biases of their era. Despite this, their literary contributions were eventually recognized for their innovation, depth, and emotional power. Tragically, their lives were cut short; Emily and Anne died of tuberculosis in their twenties, while Charlotte passed away at thirty-eight. The Bront sisters legacy endures not only because of their literary brilliance but also their defiance of societal norms and their exploration of timeless themes such as love, identity, and the human condition. Their works remain a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring relevance of literature as a mirror to the complexities of life.
