[Section A] Attempt all questions: Question: 1 (a) Which physical quantity does the electron volt measure? How is it related to the SI unit of this quantity? [2] Question: 2 (a) (a) Why does ice at 0 C feels colder than water at 0 C? [2] (b) How do the characteristics of musical note change when amplitude of a note decreases and wavelength of a note decreases? [2] (c) Draw a fully labelled and neat diagram for the verification of Ohm s law by voltmeterammeter method. [4] (d) An electric of power 750W, operates at 250V. Calculate the inductive resistance. [2] Question: 3 (a) State two practical uses of echoes. (b) Why ice at 0 C feels more colder than water at 0 C? (c) 100 g of water at 20 C is supplied 16800 J of heat energy. If specific heat capacity of water is 4.2 Jg-1 C-1, calculate the final temperature of water. (d) How is the critical angle related to the refractive index of a medium? (i) What is the direction of force acting at C? (ii) Name the force acting on it (iii) What is the direction of minimum force at A to keep the leg off the ground? (iv) If weight of wheel barrow is 10kgf and it holds 90 kgf of sand, calculate the minimum force to keep the leg off the ground. [5] (b) Draw a neat diagram for a pulley system with velocity ratio 4? [3] (c) Why do we spray water on the roads on a hot summer evening? [2] Question: 6 (a) Calculate the horse power of the motor of an elevator, which can carry 10 persons of average mass 60 kg, through a vertical height of 20m in 30 s.[ Take g=10 Nkg-1] [3] (b) State three differences between reflection and total internal reflection. [3] (c) (i) Define specific heat capacity of a substance. (ii) A metal bucket contains 8 kg of water at 25 C. 2 kg of water at 80 C is poured into it. Neglecting the absorbed by the bucket, Calculate final temperature of water [4] Question: 7 (a) The ray diagram given below illustrates the experimental set up for the determination of the focal length of a converging lens using a plane mirror. (i) State the magnification of image formed. (ii) Write two characteristics of the image formed. (iii) What is the name given to the distance between the object and optical centre of the lens in the above diagram. For what purpose we can use these two rules? [3] (d) The following diagram shows two straight wires carrying current. Copy the diagram and draw the pattern of lines of force around them and mark their directions. [3] Question: 9 (a) A metal wire of resistance 6 is stretched so that its length is increased to twice its original length. Calculate its new resistance. [3] (b) (i) An electrical gadget can give an electric shock to its user under certain circumstances. Mention any two of these circumstances. (ii) What preventive measure provided in a gadget can protect a person from an electric shock? [3] (c) (i) Name two factors on which the magnitude of an induced emf in the secondary coil depends. (ii) What is the purpose of covering cathode by thorium and carbon in a C.R.T [4] Question: 10 (a) State three ways by which a nuclear reaction differs from a chemical reaction. [3] (b) Calculate the value of 500 electron volts in joules. [2] (c) An isotope of thorium 90Th233 undergoes an alpha decay, followed by two successive beta decays to form a nuclei Z XA . Calculate the values of A and Z by writing equations. [3] (d) What is background radiation and how will you detect it. ======= [2]
