Practical Chemistry Sr.no Test 1. Rekindles the glowing splinter 2. Turns lime water milky 3. Turns moist starch iodide paper bluish black 4. Curdy white ppt with silver nitrate solution 5. Turns moist lead acetate paper silvery black 6. Turns moist potassium iodide paper brown 7. White dense fumes with HCl Gas Present Oxygen CO2 and SO2 Cl2 HCl H2S NO2 NH3 Anions present: Sr.no Anion 1. Carbonates 2. Sulphite 3. 4. Sulphide Sulphate 5. Chloride 6. Test Turns lime water milky 1.Turns acidified potassium dichromate from orange to clear green 2. Acidified potassium permanganate from pink to colourless Turns moist lead acetate paper silvery black Use Barium chloride: White ppt of barium sulphate is formed Use silver nitrate: Curdy white ppt of silver chloride is formed 1. Brown ring test 2. Turns moist potassium iodide paper brown Nitrate Test for organic compounds: Test Organic compd + Br2 solution + CCl4 Organic compd + KMnO4 Organic compd + Ethane No effect No effect No effect Ethene Brown colour discharges Purple colour discharges No effect Ethyne Brown colour discharges Purple colour discharges Red ppt Ammonical cuprous chloride solution Organic compd + Ammonical silver nitrate solution No effect No effect White ppt Instructions: 1. In case any paper is used for given test the word MOIST is very important. 2. To differentiate between any sulphate or nitrate salt directly use BaCl2 as barium sulphate is insoluble white ppt and barium nitrate is colourless solution. 3. If asked to differentiate between CO2 and SO2 gas never use lime water as both turns lime water milky. Instead use acidified potassium dichromate as SO2 will change its colour from orange to clear green; whereas CO2 will have no effect on it. 4. For distinguish any salt combination use only BARIUM CHLORIDE and SILVER NITRATE depending upon the radical present. 5. For sodium and potassium salts use FLAME TEST Sodium: Golden yellow flame Potassium: Lilac flame 6. Whenever you write radical : You need to mention the charge. Method for preparation of salts: Salt Sodium, potassium or ammonium salt Method Neutralization or titration Ferric chloride Ferrous chloride Lead salts Direct synthesis Simple displacement / Action of acid on metal Double decomposition/ Precipitation
